Abstract

Fluids for use in hydraulic systems have a kinematic viscosity at - 40 DEG C. of not more than 5000 cs. and consist of, or comprise at least 50 weight per cent of, at least one ester of formula <FORM:1083324/C4-C5/1> where R is a straight or branched chain alkylene group having at least 2 carbon atoms, R1 is phenyl or C1- 4 alkyl, R2 is ethylene, propylene or butylene, and n is an integer of 0-3. Typical esters are those derived from adipic acid and triethylene glycol monomethyl ether, and from succinic acid and ethylene glycol monomethyl ether. Many optional additives are mentioned including the following: polyoxyalkylene glycols and ethers and esters thereof, castor oil and various treated castor oils, borate esters, phosphite and phosphate esters, amine salts of inorganic acids, dialkyl citrates, dicarboxylic acids and esters thereof, fatty acids and soaps thereof, benzotriazole, mercaptobenzothiazole, phenols, sodium nitrate, phenothiazines, and various types of amines.
