Abstract
A liquid fuel, suitable for use in an internal combustion engine, comprises a gasoline containing less than 0.05 per cent by weight of a polyoxyalkylene compound of formula R1O(R2O)nR3, wherein R1 and R3 are hydrogen or an aliphatic, cycloaliphatic or mononuclear aromatic hydrocarbon radicle, R2 is an alkylene radicle and n is an integer greater than 7. The polyoxyalkylene compounds may be polyglycols or mono- or di-(alkyl or alkylphenyl) ethers thereof. The polyoxyalkylene chain (R2O)n may contain two or more dissimilar alkylene radicles. The polyoxyalkylene compound may be added as such to the gasoline or in the form of a concentrate comprising such compound dissolved in an solvent therefor (e.g. gasoline or other light hydrocarbon distillate). The gasoline base of the liquid fuel may be a straight-run, thermally or catalytically reformed or cracked, or polymerized gasoline, or any blend of such gasolines. Volatile alcohols or ethers, benzene, mixtures of aromatic hydrocarbons (e.g. benzene and toluene), naphthas, aviation turbine fuels, or kerosines, may be blended with the gasoline. The liquid fuel may also contain anti-knock agents (e.g. lead tetraalkyls, iron carbonyls and substituted or unsubstituted cyclopentadienyl iron, nickel or ruthenium) scavenging agents or deposit modifiers (e.g. halohydrocarbons, phenylboronic acid, esters of boric or silicic acid, tritolyl phosphate, triisopropyl phosphite and tricresyl arsenite), stabilizers or antioxidants (e.g. hydroquinone, alkyl phenols, N-phenyl-alpha-naphthylamine and N,N1-dibutyl-p-phenylene diamine), surface-active agents (e.g. alkylaryl sulphonates of alkali metals, ammonium dialkyl naphthalene sulphonates and N-alkyl-substituted alkylene diamines), freezing point depressants (e.g. isopropanol and 2-methyl-pentanediol-2,4), gum inhibitors and dyes. In the examples, liquid fuels are described consisting of gasoline, n-butyl mono-ethers of polyoxypropylene polyoxyethylene glycols or octylphenyl mono-ether of polyoxyethylene glycol, and 2,4 - dimethyl - 6 - tert. - butyl - phenol. The effect of replacing the polyoxyalkylene compound by isopropanol is described. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 708,193.
