BLASTING-CARTRID GE To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OSCAR T. FINeH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Little Rock, in the county of Pulaski and State of Arkansas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Blasting-Cartridges, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to blasting cartridges, and the object thereof is to construct a cartridge of such class with an extensible and contractible shell whereby provision is made to allow of increasing or diminishing the capacity of the shell to enable the explosive charge to be increased or diminished as occasion requires, overcoming thereby the employing of a cartridge with a large explosive charge for blasting purposes when but a small charge is necessary; consequently preventing waste and reducing the cost of the cartridge.
A further object of the invention is to provide the shell of the cartridge with rounded ends so that that end of the cartridge which is inserted in the bore formed in the rock or other object to be blasted will be caused to snugly fit the inner end of the bore as well as enabling the cartridge to be inserted further in the bore than would be the case if such end of the cartridge were flat.
A further object of the invention is to reinforce that end of the shell through which the fuse extends so as to strengthen such end, and which also constitutes a bearing for a resilient sealing means for such end of the shell; said resilient sealing means further constituting means for retaining the fuse in position.
A further object of the invention is to provide a blasting cartridge which shall be simple in its construction, strong, durable, conveniently handled, having an extensible and contractible shell, efficient in its use, readily set up in operative position, and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter more specifically described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein is shown the preferred embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations, and modifications can be resorted to which come within the scope of the claims hereunto appended.
In describing the invention in detail, reference is had to the accompanying drawing which illustrates a vertical sectional View of a blasting cartridge in accordance with this invention.
Referring to the drawings by reference characters, 1 denotes the outer and 2 the inner section of the shell of the cartridge, the former having a rounded outer end and the latter a rounded inner end, the said outer section 1 telescoping within the inner section 2, and, by such an arrangement, rock or other matter will be prevented from engaging the inner edge of the outer Specification of Letters Patent.

section to separate the sections, and furthermore, such manner of forming the shell of a pair of telescopic sections enables the shell to be extended or contracted so as to increase or diminish the capacity'thereof,
thereby enabling the explosive charge to be increased or diminished, and overcoming the employing of a cartridge with a large charge when only a small charge is necessary. The rounded inner end of the section 2 provides for the snugly fitting of such end at the inner end of the bore formed in the rock or other object to be blasted, and furthermore enables the cartridge to be inserted further in the bore than would be the case if the inner end of the inner section were flattened. Each of the sections of the shell of the cartridge may be constructed of gelatin, celluloid, paper, or any other suitable material, and the outer section 1 is thickened at its outer end, as at 3, and is further provided with a boss 4. The thickening of the outer end of the outer section 1 reinforces such end, and centrally of such end an opening 5 is provided.
Through the opening 5 the fuse 6 may extend, the thickened outer end 3 and the boss 4 providing a suflicient bearing for the fuse; or in the opening 5 may be secured a resilient sealing means 7 in the form of a nipple having a centrally arranged aperture and a flanged inner end 8, the diameter of the body portion of said sealing means being such as to cause a snug fit between the same and the wall of the opening 5 in the outer section 1, the thickened end 3 and boss 4 of the latter constituting a bearing for the said sealing means. As shown, the fuse 6 extends through the aperture in the sealing means 7, the opening through said sealing means being such as to cause the said means to snugly engage the fuse 6. Preferably the sealing means is employed in connection with the outer section 1. The flange 8 of the sealing means prevents its withdrawal from any cause through the opening 5, and also,
to prevent the pulling out of the fuse 6, the latter is knotted or enlarged, as at 9.
The boss 4 has its inner face beveled, as at 10, so as to direct a squib to the charge when the cartridge is not used with the fuse and sealing medium, as is the case when blasting in dry mines.
Preferably when the cartridge is used for blasting purposes in dry mines, the sealing medium is not employed, but when using the cartridge in damp mines the sealing medium when positioned will prevent water or dampness from entering the interior of the cartridge so that the charge will not be damaged, which would be the case if the sealing medium were not employed.
Owing to the providing of the inner end of the sealing medium with a flange in case the fuse were stepped upon or caught in an obstruction which would have a tendency to pull the fuse out, the knot in the fuse in connection with the flange of the sealing medium would prevent the withdrawal of the fuse, as is evident.
When positioning the cartridge for blasting, if the inner section should meet with an obstruction to retard further insertion of said inner section in the bore, pressure upon the outer section would not cause the inner section to become damaged, but would cause the outer section to enter lurther into the inner section, and thus pack the charge.
What I claim is:
1. A blasting cartridge comprising a pair of telescopic members each having a smooth periphery and a rounded end, the rounded end of one of said members being thickened and formed with an opening and an integral exteriorly-arranged boss, the inner face of the latter forming a continuation of the wall of the opening, the inner face of the boss at its outer end being beveled.
2. A blasting cartridge comprising a pair of telescopic members each having a rounded end, one of said members being of smaller diameter than the other and extending thereinto, said member of smaller diameter having its rounded end provided with an opening and an integral exteriorIy-arranged boss, the inner face thereof forming a continuation of the wall of the opening, said boss having its inner face at its outer end beveled.
3. A blasting cartridge comprising a pair of telescopic members, the inner one of which is of smaller diameter than the other and adapted to extend thereinto, said member of smaller diameter provided at one end with an opening, and a resilient sealing means mounted in said opening and projecting from the outer face of said member of smaller diameter, such resilient sealing means of a diameter as to snugly fit said opening and further provided on its inner end with a laterally-extending annular flange adapted to abut against the inner face of said inner memher.
4. A blasting cartridge comprising a pair of telescopic members, the inner one of which is of smaller diameter than the other and adapted to extend thereinto, said member of smaller diameter provided at one end with an opening, a resilient sealing means mounted in said opening and projecting from the outer face of said member of smaller diameter, said resilient sealing means of a diameter as to snugly fit said opening and further provided on its inner end with a laterally-extending annular flange adaptedto abut against the inner face of said inner member, and a fuse extending through said sealing means, said sealing means fixedly securing the fuse in position.
5. A blasting cartridge comprising a pair of telescopic members having rounded ends and smooth peripheries, the inner one of said members extending in the outer one, said inner member having its rounded end reinforced and provided with an opening and further provided with an integral exteriorly-arranged boss, the inner face of the boss forming a continuation of the wall of the opening, and a resilient sealing means'extending through the boss and opening and having a flanged inner end.
6. A blasting cartridge comprising a pair of telescopic members having rounded ends and smooth peripheries, the inner one of said members extending in the outer one, said inner member having its rounded end reinforced and pro vided with an opening and further provided with an integral exteriorly-arranged boss, the inner face of the boss forming a continuation of the wall of the opening, and a resilient sealing means extending through the boss and opening, said resilient sealing means having its inner end provided with a laterallyextending annular flange adapted to abut against the inner face of said inner member.
7. A blasting cartridge comprising a pair of telescopic members each having a smooth periphery, the inner one of said members extending into the outer one, said inner mem her having its outer end reinforced and formed with an opening, and a combined sealing and fuse retaining means snugly engaging in said opening and provided on its inner end with a laterally-extending annular flange adapted to abut against the inner face of the inner member.
