DYNAMITE DETONATlNG-CAP.
SPECIFIGATIQN forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 697,842, dated April 15, 1902.
Application filed September 15, 1900. Renewed September 7, 1901. Serial No.74,70i. (No model.)
'1'0 all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ARCHIE BIsMARK HOOVER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Paola, in the county of Miami and-State of Kansas, have invented a new and useful Dynamite Detonating-Oap, of which the fol lowing is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved construction of dynamite detouating-cap; and the object is to so construct the cap that the fuse may be quickly and conveniently attached thereto and positively held thereby, so as to avoid the danger and trouble incident to the accidental detachment of the fuse from thecap, as is so frequently the case with the construction of cap now in general use, the attachment of the fuse to the cap being effected without mashing the edge of the latter.
Afurther object is to provide the cap with means whereby it is prevented from accidentally disengaging the dynamite-cartridge.
With the above objects in view the invention consists in the novel features of construction hereinafter fully described, particularly pointed out in the claims, and illustrated by the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a cap constructed in accordance with my invention;
Fig. 2, a vertical sectional view of the same with the fuse in position therein; and Fig. 3, a vertical sectional view of a cartridge, showing the cap positioned therein.
Referring 'now more particularly to the accompanying drawings, A designates a'cap formed about its upper edge with a plurality of tangs'B and O, tangs B being pointed and tangs G blunt, said tangs B and O alternating each other. Tangs O are bent to extend perpendicular to the longitudinal extent of the cap and on the exterior thereof, while tangs B are bent on the interior of the cap, the same being curved slightly to extend outwardly from the inner wall of the cap at their pointed ends. The fuse D is inserted in the cap, and its accidental withdrawal therefrom is prevented by the engagement therewith of the tangs-B.
In the construction now in general use the cap isformed with a smooth upper edge, and the fuse is held therein by compressing said open end by biting with the teeth or by some blunt instrument. The fuse, however, is not positively held by so compressing the open end of the cap and very frequently becomes detached from the cap, causing a misfire and making it necessary to pick the tamping out of the hole, which is exceedingly dangerous.
The blunt tangs O on the outside of the cap engage the paper wrapper of the dynamite cartridge and prevent the cap from becoming displaced.
From the above description it will be seen that I produce a cap which can be manufactured at a very slight increase over the cost of manufacture of the present construction of cap and which carries simple and effective means for positively preventing the accidental detachment of the fuse therefrom and of the cap from the cartridge.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
1. A cap for cartridges having a plurality of tangs formedabout the edge of its open end, some of said tangs being bent to extend inwardly upon the interior of the cap and others bent to extend upon the exterior of the cap, substantially as described.
2. A cap for cartridges having a plurality of tangs formed about its upper edge, some of said tangs being blunt and others pointed,
the pointed and the blunt tangs alternating each other, said blunt tangs being bent out wardly to extend at right angles to the cap, and the pointed tangs bent downwardly on the inside of thecap,substantially as set forth.
