SPECIFICATIGN forming part of Letters Patent No. 588,339, dated August 17, 189'?.
" Application filed February 19, 1897. Serial No. 624,254. (No model.)
To all whom, it many/,l concern:
p Be it knownthat LWILLIAM HENRY KnLso, a citizen of the United States, residing at Butte7 in the county of Silver Bow and State of Montana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Miners Picks; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description ofv the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make'and use the same.
My invention has relation to improvements in miners picks; and tlie'object is to provide the pick with a detachable point.
To this end the novelty consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of the same, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings the same reference-characters indicate the same parts of the invention.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved mining-piek. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of one of the arms and point, and Fig.
3 is a horizontal section of the same.
1 represents the eye, and 2 2 the integral arms. The outer ends of these arms are each formed with a longitudinal rectangular socket 3, the side walls Ll 4 of which are parallel to each other, while the top and bottom walls 5 5 gradually converge from the shoulder 6 inwardly toward the eye.
7 represents a circular orificel extending through the top and bottom walls.
9 represents the detachable point, and it is provided with an integral rectangular shank 10, formed with a shoulder 12 and parallel sides 13 and 14, while the top and bottom sides 15 and 16 converge from the shoulder to the end of the shank. The shank itself conforms exactly in shape to the socket 3, which it snugly fits. y
An orifice 17 in the shank 10 is slightly curved longitudinally and out of alinement with the corresponding orifice in the socket, so that when the pin 18 is inserted it bends to conform to the curved orifice 17, forming a kink and making it impossible for its accidental withdrawal.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States7 1s- A miners pick comprising the eye 1, the integral arm 2 formed with the socket 3 having orifices 7, in combination with the detachable point 9 having the integral shank 10 provided with the longitudinally-curved orice 17 and the Ypin 18, whereby when the shank 10 is inserted in said socket and its inner end 'abutting against the end wall thereof and the pin Vdriven through the orices 7 and V17, a portion of the said pin will be bent or knocked out of alinement with the orifices 7, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM HENRY KELSO.
