COAL-HANDLING IMPLEMENT.
Specificationcf Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 30, 1906.
Application filed March 20, 1906. Serial No. 307.129.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NELSON EDWARD WAT- soN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Galeton, in the county of Potter and State have invented a new and useful Coal-Handling Implement, of which the followingis a specification.
This invention relates to implements employed by firemen or stokers to assist them in handling the coal used in the furnaces, and
to produce a simply-constructed implement whereby the mass of coal may be broken down and disposed in a more convenient position for shoveling, and thus materially reduce the labor that is required to feed the fires.
With this and other objects in view, which will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, as hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification and in which corresponding parts are denoted by like designating characters, is illustrated the preferred form of the embodiment of the invention capable of carrying the same into practical operation.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved implement. Fig. 2 is a transverse section, enlarged, on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1.
The improved implement comprises a plate or blade 10, preferably of steel, pressed or otherwise formed into the required shape, relatively wide at one end, as at 11, and converging to a point 12 at the other end, with one face concaved and the other face convexed or with the blade curved transversely, as represented in Fig. 2, with the edges relatively sharp and with a strengthening-rib 13 extending centrally through the blade and merging'lntothe point 12, as shown, the rib being integral with the blade and relatively knife-edged, as shown. At one end of the ing the blade a socket 14 is formed thereon to receive a handle 15 and with a hammer-head 16 extending from the socket. An implement thus constructed will be found very convenient and useful for breaking down or loosenmass of coal in a locomotive-tender or in the coal-bunkers employed in connection with furnaces of various'kinds to place the same in a much more. convenient condition for shoveling by the fireman or stokera The pointed end 12, together with the diverging sides of the blade and the shar ened rib, enables the implement to be orced through the mass of coal with comparatively slight pressure, and thus materially assists the fireman or stoker in his work and also materially reduces the labor and time required in transferring the coal from the tender or bunker to the furnaces. The hammer portion 16 is also an important adjunct to the device and is employed in breaking large lumps of coal preparatory to handling them with the shovel.
The implement may be of any required size and the handle of any required length to correspond to the locality where the implement is to be employed.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is An im lement of the class described consisting o a body having a convex outer face and a concave inner face and a handle-socket at one end with the side edges of the body converging toward the other end, and a knifeedged rib integral with and projecting from the concaved face of the plate and extending in advance of the converging end of the same.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto afiixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
NELSON EDWARD WATSON.
