(No Model.)
S. GLOOR.
GUN CLEANER.
Patented Nov 16, 1897,
UNITED STATES 1 ATENT FFICEY.
SOLOMON GLOOR, OF BURLINGTON, IOWA, ASSIGNOR TO CHARLES F.
EBNER, OF SAME PLACE.
GUN-CLEAN ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 593,648, dated November 16, 1897.
Application filed April 10, 1897. Serial No. 631,490. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SOLOMON GLOOR, acitizen of the United States, residing at Burlington, in the county of Des Moines and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gun-Cleaners and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to those gun-cleaners composed of a pivoted scraper attached to a stem adapted to be screwed on the end of a jointed or other cleaning-rod.
The purpose of my device is to provide a cleaner wherein the pivoted scrapers are reversible, so that they will operate on the inside of the barrel during the backward and forward reciprocations of the cleaning-rod, and to pivot these scrapers in such amanner upon a stem having attachingdevices at its opposite ends, whereby either end can be attached to a cleaning-rod when necessary.
With this object in view my invention consists in the peculiar features and combinations of parts more fully described hereinafter and pointed out'in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my device attached to a section of a cleaning-rod; Fig.
2, a horizontal view showing the scraper in longitudinal section, and Fig. 3 an end view'..
The reference-letter A denotes the stem, to which the pivoted scrapers are attached. This stem is by preference composed of a round bar of metal having its opposite ends provided with screw-threads b, which terminate at shoulders 0. Both ends of the stem are constructed exactly alike, so that either can be attached to the end of a cleaning-rod 1; with equal facility. This stem is made long enough to allow the threaded ends to project a slight distance beyond the ends of the scrapers cl. These scrapers consist of a pair of elongated concaved plates of sheet spring metal, preferably brass. Their opposite ends flare outwardly, so that when the parts are assembled the scrapers are substantially bellshaped at both ends and are beveled at e to form a sharp edge, which is adapted to have spring-pressure and scrape against the inside of the gun-barrel. Both scrapers are pivoted at the middle on a transverse stud or pin f, which passes through a pair of overlapping lugs g on the sides of the scrapers. The flaring ends h of the scrapers are wider than their body portions, in order to engage a larger area of the surface of the inside of the gun barrel.
Thus constructed it will be observed that either end of the cleaner can be screwed upon the end of acleaning-rod with equal facility and thatin case the device should stick within the barrel and it should be desirable to unscrew'the rod for the purpose of attaching and pulling the cleaner from the other end of the gun-barrel it can be readily done, and often much annoyance and labor saved thereby.
Another advantage of my device is that it can be used with equal facility in a ten or twelve gage gun. 7
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a gun-cleaner, a central stem, in combination with a pair of concaved elongated spring-plates pivoted to the middle of the rod so as to rock loosely and having outwardlyfiaring ends, substantially as described.
2. In a gun-cleaner, the combination with a central stem having screws at both ends, of a pair of elongated spring-plates provided with widened flaring ends, and centrally pivoted to loosely rock on the stem substantially as described.
In witness whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
