To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CLARENCE J. HAT- FIELD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Buckner, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Plow- Point Tongs; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates broadly to improvements in tongs such as those used by blacksmiths and other metal workers and the object thereof is to provide a simply constructed tool which will operate to great advantage for holding a plow point while sharpening the nose thereof after it has become dulled.

With this general object in view, the invention resides in certain novel features of construction and unique combinations of parts to be hereinafter fully described and claimed, the descriptive matter being supplemented by the accompanying drawing which constitutes a part of this application and in which:

Figure 1 is a bottom plan view of a plow point showing the application of the invention thereto; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the tool showing an edge view of the point held thereby; Fig. 8 is a perspective view of the improved tool; Fig. 4 is a detail transverse section of one of the jaws thereof.

In specifically describing the structure shown in the drawing above briefly described, similar characters will be employed to designate corresponding parts throughout the several views and reference will be herein made to the numerous elements by their respective indices. To this end, the numerals l and 2 designate a pair of steel or iron bars crossed near their front ends and pivoted together at 3. The front end of bar 1 is flattened and is preferably straight to form a jaw 4 disposed obliquely of the body portion of said bar, this jaw being adapted for contact with the upper side of a plow point P as shown clearly in Fig. 2. The jaw 4 is preferably channeled longitudinally on its working face as indicated at 5 to permit better engagement thereof with the plow point. At the point 6 the front end of the bar 2 is bent out wardly away from the working face of the jaw 4 and is then bent inwardly to form a U '7 adapted to straddle the land side flange F of point P, the free end of said U having a cross head 8 formed integrally therewith and positioned obliquely of the jaw 4, said U being disposed in approximately the plane of said jaw, that is, it extends obliquely of the tool to about the same degree as this jaw. The head 8 constitutes a second jaw adapted to contact with the inner side of the flange F and with the lower side of the point. P,

To retain the flange F in or substantially in contact with the head 8 and thus prevent turning of the point P between the jaws, a curved finger 9 is formed integrally with the fixed end of the U 7, said finger being adapted to contact with the outer side of the aforesaid flange and having its free end 10 disposed at any suitable point between the ends of the head 8.

By constructing the improved tongs in the manner shown and described, they will be highly efficient .and durable and will fulfil a long felt need in that a plow point may be readily held thereby while sharpening the earth penetrating'nose thereof.

I claim:'

' A tool for holding plow points, said tool comprising a pair of bars crossed and pivoted together near their front ends, the front end of one bar being disposed obliquely of the remainder of said bar and being sub stantially straight to form a jaw for contact with the upper face of the plow point, the front end of the other bar being bent outwardly away from the working face of the aforesaid jaw and being then extended inwardly toward said jaw to form a U adapted to straddle the land side flange of the point, the free end of said U having thereon a cross head constituting a second jaw extending obliquely of the other and adapted to contact withthe lower face of the point and with the inner side of said flange, In testimony whereof I have hereunto set the fixed end of said U having formed 'theremy hand in the presence of two subscribing on a laterally extending finger adapted to witnesses. contact with the outer side of the aforesaid CLARENCE J.
