UNITED STATES PATENT @rrrca.
AARON F. DIOKEY, OF SOMERSET, PENNSYLVANIA,
CARTRlDGE SHELL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 300,449, dated June 17, 1884.
(No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, AARON F. DIUKEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Somerset, in the county of Somerset and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Paper Shell or Cartridge, of which the fo1- lowing is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to paper shells or cartridges; and it has for its object'to provide the same with a removable metallic breech.
A further object of my invention is to provide an improved form of breech, which, when screwed on the end of the shell or tube, serves to crimp or turn in the edges of the shell, thereby making the attachment more secure.
A further object of my invention is to prevent the shell from spreading when adjusting the breech or when discharging the gun.
"With these objects in view the said invention consists in certain details of construction and combination of parts, as hereinafter set forth, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view ofmy improvedshell or cartridge. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the metallic breech.
Like letters of reference are used to designate corresponding parts in the several ures.
Referring to the drawings, A designates the shell, constructed of paper or other suitable material.
B designates the metallic breech, comprising the cylindrical body 0, projecting forward and fitting within the shell, so as to serve as a protection i'or the same when discharging the gun, the rear portion of the body being connected to a circular wall or cap, D. The rear portion of the body is provided with a circular series of teeth or crimpers, E E, preferably four in number, and a semicircular annular recess or depression, F, is formed in the body, between the teeth and the circular cap D, said recess receiving the ends of the shell when the breech is adjusted on the same. An annular flange, G, extends outward from the circular wall or cap D, and is milled on its edge, as shown, the fingers being applied to the milled edge of the circular cap, so as to turn the breech in adjusting the same in position. A wall or flange, H, projects from the circularcap D inwardly over the recess F, and is adapted to prevent the shell from spreading when the breech is being adjusted or when the gun is discharged. The circular cap or rear wall, D, is formed integral with the body 0, and is provided in its center with a circular recess, I, a small opening, J, being formed through said recess, for the purpose well known in the art. The interior rear portion of the body is dished from the sides to the opening J; but I do not limit myself to this construction.
The operation of my invention will be readily understood from the foregoing description,
taken in connection with the annexed draw-' ings. The metallic breech is applied to the end of the shell by passing the projecting front end of the breech into the shell, the threads or teeth E engaging with the ends ol the shell, so as to crimp the same and cause said ends to be received by the recess or depression F. It will be seen that the ends or edges of the shell will be crimped and turned in the semicircular annular recess F, while the wall or flange H will project over the recess and prevent the ends of the shell from being displaced, and will also serve to prevent the shell from spreading when the breech is being adjusted. By this means I am enabled to provide a safe and efficient attachment of the breech to the shell. The teeth or crimpers should be rounded on their lower edges to lessen the friction in adjusting the breech, and are arranged at equal distances apart. The metallic breech may be made any desirable length, so as to project forward sufliciently to serve as a protection to the paper shell in discharging the gun, or as a guide to the threaded part in ad justing it. The part of the breech entering the shell is made plain, so as to fit the inside of the same. I
My improved breech is simple and inexpensive in construction, and may be manufactured at a slight cost.
Having described myinvention, I claim 1. In a shell or cartridge, the herein-described removable metallic breech, comprising the cylindrical body, the circular cap at the rear end, the circular series of teeth or crimpers, and the semicircular recess or depression at the rear thereof, for the purpose set forth.
2 The combination, with the shell or car-- comprising the cylindrical body and circular cap formed integral, threads, teeth, or crimpers on the exterior face of the body, a recess or depression between the teeth and the circular cap, and a wall or flange projecting inward from the cap over the recess, as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses. I
AARON F. DIGKEY.
