Be it known that I, CHARLES A. BAILEY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Cromwell, in -theA county of Middlesex and; State of Connecticut, have invented' certain' new and useful Improvements in Cartridges, ot' which the following is a specification.

The object of my invention is to provide a simple, cheap, and eiiective means for irmly and securely connecting the parts of a paper-V tube cartridge together and in such manner that there will be no possible chanceof the such thatthe part yvhicli holdsthe-tube in tube becoming separated from the cap or head in abstracting the cartridge from the firearm, the breech construction of the cartridge being place will also serve as a' reinforce.

With the above objects in View my invention consists,broadly,iu a cartridge comprising a'flanged cap or head,a tubeinserted therein, and a breech-piece having spurs or` projections which are embedded in the tube,

My invention further consists in the particular construction and combinationof the parts, all as will be hereinafter fully described, and more specifically set forth in the appended claims.

In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, Figure 1 isa longitudinal sectional view 'of acartridge conf structed in accordance with, my invention. Fig. 2 is a similar View illustrating the operation of connecting-theparts. Fig. 3 is a lon-V gitudinal sectional View illustrating amodiied form of breech-piece. Fig. 4 is a detail View of thebreech-piece.

In carrying out my invention the cartridgeshell is made up of three parts-t0 wit, the head or cap-A, the tube B, and the breechpiece C-and these parts are intimately and firmly connected together to form a strong' and durable cartridge.

The head or cap A is providedwith the usual iange a, which is formed by expanding the rim to provide an annular recess d within said flange andinto whichthe ends of the tube and `breech-piece are forced, as hereinafter described. The end ofthe'head or cap may be solid as shown in Fics. 1 and 2 to form a u I i u D n u gas-tight cartr1dge,or1t maybe provided with aninwardly-projecting open-ended nipple The tube B, which may be either entirely of paper or composed of several thicknesses of paper and metal, is crimped inward at its innerend, forming the ange b. This tube is adapted to tit the cap or head snugly, and when itis inserted the crimped end bears against the end of said cap or head, as shown in Fig. 2. The breech-piece C is dished or cup shape,

. being'struck up from a disk of metal, and the edge of this breech-piece is cut away at intervals to form a series of spurs or pointsr c, which are adapted to be embedded in the tube and enter the annular recess formed by the flange a of the cap or head. The central'portion of the breech-piece is bulged, as shown atc', and the fulminate is placed upon the innerside of this bulged portion, forming agastight cartridge in connection with a solid head. The bulged portion is indented, forming a central internal point c2, to insure the explosion of the fulminate, and at each side Yof said point are dash-holes c3, which comf municate with the powder charge. lVhen the breeclbpieceis employed in connection with an ordinaryprimer, the central portion is provided with an opening, so that said breechpiece will tit over the nipple.'

In connecting the parts hereinbefore described they are assembled as shown in Fig. 2, and by inserting a punch the breech-piece is flattened out, forcing the spurs or points into the paper tube at the cornerthereof, and said points or spurs enter the annular recess a. of the flange a of the cap or head, being wedged therein to firmly and securely hold the parts together. By forcin g only a portion of the periphery of the breech-piece into the tube the end of latter is not liable to be cut oft, as would be likely to occur should the periphery be provided with a straight edge. By this construction of cartridge the paper tube is securely fastened to the cap or head and the parts are not liable to become separated. It will also be noted that the breech-piece rc- IOO inforces the cap or head, forming a thicker wall at the breech of the cartridge. The cartridge is simple in construction and can bel manufactured at small expense, using comparatively thin metal.

To provide for further reinforcing the breech of the cartridge, I purpose to use a breech-piece as illustratediu Fig. 3, in Which said breech-piece (desigiiated by the lettere) is formed with a sleeve having spurs e', the end wall e2 being flattened into the fiange f, forming the flange es. provided with a nipple f to receive an ordinary primer, and the end Wall of the breechpiece is provided with a central opening, through which said nipple projects. With this form of cartridge 4a straight tube is used, and when the punch is inserted the flange e3 of the breech-piece enters the flangef of the head or cap,` and the spurs e enter the tube to hold it securely in engagement with said breech-piece. I contemplate providing the breech-piece with a spiral rib instead of the spurs.

Having thus particularly described my invention, I do not wish to be understood as limiting my protection by patent to what is herein particularly shown and described, for

I claim- I. A cartridge, comprising a flanged cap or head, a tube inserted therein, and a breechpiece having a portion of its periphery embedded into the tube and projected into the flange of the cap or head, substantially as shown and described.

In a cartridge, the combination with the cap or head having a fiange forming an annular recess, of the tube crimped inward at its inner end, and a cup-shaped disk bulged centrally and having a portion of its periphery embedded in the crimped end of the tube and projected into the aforesaid recess of the cap or head, substantially as shown and described. l

4. In a cartridge, the combination, of the cap or head having a flange forming an annular recess, a tube having a crimped end inserted in the cap or head, and a cup-shaped disk having points at its edge which are forced into the tube and recess, substantially as shown and described.

5. In a cartridge, the combination, of a cap or head having a flange forming an annular recess, a tube having a crimped end inserted in the cap or head, and a cup-shaped disk bulged centrally and provided at its edge with spurs or points which are forced into the tube and aforesaid recess, substantially as shown and described.

6. In a cartridge, the combination, of a cap or head having a iange forming an annular recess, a tube having a crimped end inserted into the cap or head, arnd a cup-shaped disk cut away at its edge to form points or spurs which are forced into the tube and aforesaid recess, substantially as shown and described.
