UNITED STATES PATENT Urrrcn.
JOHN BLAKE KENDALL, OF IVASI-IINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA.
CARTRIDGE.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 588,443, dated August 17, 1897. Application filed April 5, 1897. Serial No. 630,759. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Beit known that 1, JOHN BLAKE KENDALL,
of'Washington, in the District of Columbia,
have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cartridges; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a view, partly in side elevation and longitudinal section, of a cartridge with my invention applied; and Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of my igniter-support.
Letters of like name and kind refer to like parts in each of the figures.
The object of my invention is to provide an efiicient and inexpensive support for the igniting-powder used in cartridges employed with ordnance; and to this end said invention consists in the igniting-support and in the combination of the same with a cartridge,
substantially as hereinafter specified.
In constructing cartridges for use with ordnance it is customary, owing to the comparative slowness of the ignition of the powder charge used, to employ anigniter A, of more quickly ignitible powder, arranged in proximity to the primer B, so as to be ignited by the latter when fired. Such igniter is inclosed in a suitable bag or envelop of cloth 0, and it is necessary to hold or support it to keep it in position relative to the primer. For this purpose there is employed a thin disk D, that is placed within the cartridge-case E against the head F thereof, its diameter being such that it snugly fits the case. The
. cartridge shown being a central-fire one, the
disk D is perforated at its center by a round opening 01 in line with the primer B, and over said opening the igniter A is held by having its envelop glued or otherwise attached to the face of the disk D. The periphery of the disk is beveled or chamfered to conform to a fillet in the corner of the case, and the wall of the opening d is similarly shaped to fit a fillet or projection on the head around the primer, but of course these features are merely adaptations of the disk to the formation of the cartridge, and hence may be and will be varied to suit variations in the latter.
It is desirable that the disk D shall be of little Weight and most inexpensive of manufacture, and the material best meeting these requirements that I have found after investigation and experiment is wood-pulp, which is molded or pressed to the desired shape. Pulp of other material than woodas, for example, cotton or linen1nay be employed, but I prefer wood-pulp.
\Vith the igniter A attached to the disk D and the latter placed in the cartridge-case against the head Fit will be plain that neither in placing the charge G within the case around and over the igniter nor subsequently can the igniter be accidentally displaced from the desired position relative to the primer.
As a projection on the case-head around the primer is usually present in cartridges, I prefer to form the disk-openin g (Z to fit such projection, as the latter thus serves to fix and hold the disk, with the attached igniter, firmly in place, even though the diameter of the disk be so much less than the internal diameter of the case that the disk will derive no support from the latter. It is to be understood, however, that this is merely an expression of preference in the construction of the disk, and is not to be taken as a restriction of the scope of the invention, for the form and size of the disk may be varied as occasion may suggest or require without departure from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim is- 1. An igniter support or holder for cartridges made of pulp formed to shape, and having an opening to closely fit a projection on the cartridge-case head, arou nd the primer, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. In a cartridge, the combination of the case, the charge therein, a primer, an igniter adjacent to the latter, and within the charge, and an igniter-support, composed of a suitably-shaped body of pulp, over an opening in which, adjacent to the primer, the igniter is placed and to which it is secured, said open ing having such size as to closely fit a projection on the cartridgecase head, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. In a cartridge, the combination of the case, the charge, a primer, an igniter adjacent-t0 the latter, and a disk of pulp closely fitting the case, and having an opening, over which the igniter is placed, which opening closely fits & projection on the cartridge-case 5 head, substantially as and forthe purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I JOHN BLAKE KENDALL.
