seen-that during the firing a higher pressure is produced than if a free space were formed between the priming and the powder, while the initial velocity of the projectile will be This fact has suggested the provision of means whereby a free space is always secured between the powder and the priming of the cartridge, the object thereof being to reduce the maximum pressure produced, and consequently tbe danger of breaking the barrel of guns or the like.
The invention consists of the novel combinat-ion of parts fully described and claimed hereinafter, reference being had to the accom pan yin g explanatory drawings, wherein- Figure l is a sectional view of one form of embodiment of my invention. Referringito Figs. 1 to 3, l represents a diaphragm made in the shape of a cap and provided with perforations 2, varying in accordance with the different cartridges. Said 4o diaphragm is inserted into the cartridge as shown in Fig. 3, so as to separate the powder 3 from the priming 4. Having fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
