SHOTGUN CARTRIDGE CASE.

SHOTGUN CARTRIDGE-CASE.
Application filed November 11, 1914.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM O. BONHAM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Highland Home, in the county of Grenshaw and the State of Alabama, have invented new and useful Improvements in the Manufacture of Shotgun Cartridge-Cases, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in shot gun cartridge cases, and the objects of my improvements are to make a cartridge case with a solid, seamless paper tube, extending from the top or mouth of the case to the primer seat or pocket and to provide a mechanical device that will permanently hold or lock the paper tube to the outside cup or head.
Figure 1 shows a Vertical cross section of the uncompleted cartridge case. Fig. 2 shows a similar view of the completed cartridge case.
I attain the objects of my invention by mechanically folding or turning the paper tube square or at right angles toward the center of same until the base or head end of the said tube makes contact with the primer seat, and by using an automatic locking disk in combination with a metal band or ring.
The diameter of the locking disk is larger than the internal diameter of the paper tube; it is made of thin sheet steel, and has a center hole, through which the primer seat or pocket passes and is cupped, dished, or concaved in order to decrease its diameter so that it will easily assemble inside the paper tube, after the said disk has been placed inside the band or ring referred to above. The band or ring is made of the same material as the locking disk, and its external diameter is the same as the internal diameter of the paper tube; it has its lateral ends overlapping to allow for the expansion of the locking disk, and its head or base end turned the same as the paper tube, making a flange on top of which the locking disk rests. The functions of this said band are to retain the locking disk and base wad and to prevent the locking disk from cutting the paper tube, when the said disk expands to its original diameter, which expansion automatically takes place during the operation of compressing the base wad.
The paper base wad, which is common to Specification of Letters Patent.

Serial No. 871,578.
drawing, set forth a cartridge case such as is herein described.
Fig. 1 shows a vertical cross section of the cartridge case when it is completely assembled, and before it receives the final operation of compressing the wad, WV; Fig. 2 shows the base wad, IV, after it has been compressed; it shows the locking disk, D, after it has expanded the paper tube, A, into the inside portions of the rim, H and H; it further shows the tube, A, in one continuous piece from its mouth or top to the primer pocket, P, and shows the band, B, performing its functions of retaining the base wad, TV, and preventing the disk, D, from cutting through the tube, A, at H and H.
I am aware that prior to my invention a method of metal lining shot gun cartridge cases has been used in this country, but I am not aware that such a combination as is herein set forth has ever been used, or is used at present anywhere.
I make no claim as to a metal lined cartridge case.
I claim:
A cartridge comprising a cylindrical paper member having one of its ends closed and provided with a central aperture, a priming pocket received within said central aperture, an outer metallic base member having a portion of greater diameter than the cylindrical member and having an upwardly extending flange engaging the outer face of the cylindrical paper member, an inner metallic lining for the base of the cylindrical paper member, a convex disk of a diameter equal to the inner diameter of the metallic lining, and means engaging said convex disk to force the metallic lining into the inner wall of the cylindrical paper member and to force the edges of the closed end of the cylindrical paper member into the enlarged portion of the base flange.
