To all whom it may concern: l
Be it known that I, WILLIAM C. NELSON, a subject of King of Sweden, residing at Rochester, in the county of Stratford and State of--New Hampshire, have invented certain new anduseful Improvements in Cartridge-Shells, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to cartridge shells and has forits primary object to provide a xtridge shell whose body is composed of Another object of the invention is to provide a cartridge shell, the body of which is secured to the head, between the slit edges thereof.
A further object of this invention is to -I provide a cartridge shell which will have the strength of one composed entirely of metal, but lwhich will be materially ,lighter 'iin weight and therefore much more convenient to transport.
Still yanother object of this invention is to provide a cartridge shell which will not be a conductor of electricity, making the same much more safe.
With these and other objects in view, this invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specilication, in lwhich similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts. and in which,

Fig. 2 is a similar view with the head attached, and Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view of a small sized cartridge shell.
Although but one size of cartridge shell is hereinafter described, it is understood that this invention may be used in connection with fire arms of diiferent calibers, such as rifles, shot guns, iield guns, machine and naval guns. Also the cartridge shell may be made in different tapers and shapes such as bottle neck and the like.
Referring to the drawings, 5 indicates the body of the cartridge shell which is composed of hard fiber, which is commonly known as vulcanized fiber, bone or hard fiber. @ne end of the body is slightly reduced, forming a shoulder 6, and the reduced end is provided with a plurality of circumferential grooves or recesses 7, the inner walls of which form ribs 8 on the interior of the body, the
purpose of which will be more fully de' is slit to form the two sections 11 and 12,
hereinafter termed the outer and inner Walls respectively. The outer wall has on its inner periphery, a plurality of circumferential ribs 13, which are received in the recesses 7 in the body, while the inner periphery of the inner wall is provided with a series of circumferential grooves 14. which receive the ribs 8. An annular slit is formed within the base portion of the cap 9 and provides means whereby the section 11 may be rea-dily bent outwardly.
In assembling the cartridge shell, the head is positioned on the body so that the ribs 8 are received in the recesses 14C. In order to make a tight joint therebetween, the inner wall 12 is pressed against the body. Then the outer wall 11 is forced into engagement with the reduced end of the body and the ribs 13 seated in the recesses 7. In this position the edge of the wall 11 rests against the shoulder G and thereby assists in limiting the movement of the head on the body.
Various changes in the form, proportion and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention as claimed.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A cartridge shell comprising a cylindrical body having annular exterior recessesforming interior ribs, and a shoulder, a cap having a split, said cap including an inner and outer ange forming a recess for the cylindrical body said recess terminating at the split, the flanges having recessesand ribs respectively for engaging the recesses 'and ribs of the cylindrical body.
