CARTRIDGE-SHELL.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, LOUIE A. SHERMAN and HARRY E. SHERMAN, citizens of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cartridge-Shells; and we do declare the following to be a'full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same reference being had to the accompanying rawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Our invention relates to cartridge shells and more particularly to the breech caps forming a part thereof, the principal object of the invention being to provide a breech cap having a battery cup which will reinforce the cap head and prevent the es cape of gas from the cup into a gun breech when the cartridge is discharged. In ac complishing this object we have provided the improved details of structure hereinafter described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure I is a longitudinal section of a cartridge shell constructed according to our invention, showing the cap before it has been crimped. Fig. II is a similar view with the battery cup spaced from the cap, to more clearly illustrate the parts. Fig. III is an inside perspective view of the battery Fig. IV is a longitudinal section of a completed shell, showing the battery cup in place.
Referring more in detail to the parts: 1 designates a shell cylinder, 2 a base wad, and 3 a metal cap having a cup aperture 3' of ordinary construction, the outer end of the cylinder being held by the cap crimp A when the shell is assembled. On the end of cap 3 is a battery cup 5, the body of which overlies the outer face of the cap and has an edge flange 6 bent over the edge of the cap edge and into the cap crimp 4:, to fasten it to the cap. body is a socket 8, which is formed in a piece 'with the body, preferably by drawing, and is adapted for projection through the aperture 3 in the cap 3 and for containing a primer 9, similar to the ordinary battery cup. The end of the socket 8 is apertured at 10 to pass fire from the primer into the shell in the usual manner.
In assembling the shell, the cylinder is placed in the cap, the battery cup set over the head of the cap with the socket projected into thecap aperture, and the edge flanges projected over the edge of the cap. The cap and edge of the battery cup are then crimped to fasten them to ether and to bind the end of the cylinder within the end of the cap.
With thisv construction the cap head is reinforced by the battery cup and the body of the battery cup being extended over the head of the cap, leaves no space for the escape of gas or powder into the gun breech.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new therein and desire to secure by Letters'Patent is:
1. In a cartridge shell, a body member having an apertured end cap, and a battery cup comprising integral body and socket members, said body member having an edge flange crimped over the edge of the shell ca and said socket member being projected through the aperture in said cap and provided with a primer.
2.'In a cartridge shell, having a body member provided with an apertured end cap, a battery cup having a body member completely covering the end of the cap and having a perforated socket member projected through the cap aperture into the body of the shell and provided with a primer, substantially as set forth.
