Abstract
1,188,444. Explosive compositions. E.I. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO. 15 Jan., 1968 [16 Jan., 1967], No. 2174/68. Heading C1D. An aqueous explosive composition of improved resistance to separation comprises water, an inorganic oxidizing salt, a thickener, and a partially nitrated aromatic hydrocarbon sensitizer dispersed by an aliphatic monamide having from 1 to 4 carbon atoms. Sensitizers specified are mono- and di-nitroxylene, mono- and dinitrobenzene, mono- and dinitrotoluene, and mixtures thereof. Suitable monamides are formamide, N,N-dimethyl formamide, acetamide, acrylamide, propionamide, and mixtures thereof. The oxidizing salt may be an alkali metal, alkaline earth metal, or ammonium nitrate or perchlorate; ammonium nitrate in combination with sodium nitrate is preferred. Many suitable thickeners are listed and are the same as those given in Specification 1,188,443. A non-explosive carbonaceous fuel may also be incorporated; examples given include finelydivided coal, vegetable products, meals, solid and liquid hydrocarbons, and cellular materials. Pumice, perlite, and vermiculite may be added as cellular mineral materials. The composition may be further stabilized and foamed by the addition of a proteinaceous material, e.g. egg albumin, as described in Specification 1,188,443. In making the composition, the monamide should be added not later than the sensitizer. In examples, the following ingredients are used: aqueous ammonium nitrate liquor, solid ammonium nitrate, sodium nitrate, dinitrotoluene, nitrotoluene, formamide, acetamide, sugar, coal, bagasse pith, egg albumin, and guar gum. Sodium dichromate and potassium antimony tartrate are included as cross-linking agents for the guar gum.
