Abstract

A permitted explosive having high deflagration safety comprises an organic nitrate sensitizing agent and a mixture of ammonium chloride, alkali metal nitrate, and alkaline earth carbonate, the mixture being in a molar ratio such that the amount of alkaline earth metal carbonate is insufficient to combine with all the HCl liberated by reaction of ammonium chloride and alkali metal nitrate. The sensitizing agent may be nitroglycerine, nitroglycol, and/or PETN; KNO3 and NaNO3 are suitable alkali metal nitrates; and the carbonate may be CaCO3, MgCO3, BaCO3, or dolomite. For a positive oxygen balance, more alkali metal nitrate may be added with or without ammonium chloride. The composition may also include combustible substances, e.g. wood flour, cellulose ether, metal soaps, expanded flour, chlorinated paraffins, or waxes based on chlorinated naphthalene, together with an oxygen-yielding salt. Inert substances which may be included are common salt, clay, and silicates.
