Abstract

570,075. Gas - pressure producing charges. TAYLOR, J., WHETSTONE, J., and IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Nov. 6, 1942, No. 15688. [Class 9 (ii)] A charge containing (a) ammonium nitrate, (b) a chromate compound which will sensitize the thermal decomposition of the nitrate, (c) a substance which will lower the melting point of the nitrate to below 115‹ C., and (d) an oxidizable substance, is at least partly fused and cast at a temperature not exceeding 115‹ C. The substances (c) and (d) may be one and the same. The chromate compound may be an alkali metal or ammonium bichromate or polychromate. The melting point depressant may be (1) saline compounds such as nitrates or chlorides of alkali metals and alkaline earth metals, lead nitrate, magnesium sulphate or ammonium chloride, (2) hydrated salts, which retard thermal decomposition of ammonium bichromate, e.g. magnesium nitrate hexahydrate, Epsom salts, zinc nitrate hexahydrate, calcium nitrate tetrahydrate, microcosmic salt, or (3) weakly basic or non-basic organic aminoderivatives, e.g. dicyandiamide, guanidine nitrate, nitroguanidine, acetamide or guanidine. The oxidizable substance may be lamp black, graphite or resins, or fusible nitrohydrocarbons, hydrocarbons or waxes emulsified in the melt with the aid of bentonite or kieselguhr ; organic polyhydroxy compounds are too easily oxidized by the chromate compounds to be of use as oxidizable substance. The charge may be used in conjunction with nitrocellulose smokeless powder and black powder. Specification 453,210 is referred to.
