Abstract

431,950. Igniters for blasting - cartridges ; explosives. TAYLOR, J., 7, Winton Circus, YOUNG, W., 118, Argyle Road, both in Saltcoats, Ayrshire, and IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd., Millbank, London. April 7, 1934, No. 10578. [Classes 9 (i) and 9 (ii)] A safety igniter for non-deton. ating safety blasting cartridges or bore-hole charges comprises a charge 3 of low - temperature - reactive material and an electric initiator 6 in a container 1 having an aperture 2 at the forward end, the charge 3 being coherent and formed in such a manner as to leave a passage, for example a central passage 4, connecting at one end with the aperture 2, there being included also a screen adapted tc prevent the escape of the products of combustion of the initiator before they have been safely cooled and to offer no effective resistance to the ejection of the products of combustion of the charge 3. The initiator 6 is preferably substantially gasless in its operation as described in Specification 428,872, and is arranged with its leads 10 embedded in wax 9 in a paper tube 8 secured in the container by crimping the end 7. The screen is preferably a disc 5 between the initiator 6 and the charge 3, and may then be of metal to transmit heat for the ignition of the charge 3, or of low-temperature combustible material. In addition to or instead of the disc 5, a screen of fireproofed wax paper may be provided over the aperture 2. The charge 3 may be a single substance, or a mixture of substances, for example : (1) Ammonium dichromate ; (2) Mixtures of sodium nitrite with ammonium chloride or sulphate with or without small proportions of stabilizing substances such as sodium carbonate as described in Specification 431,935 ; (3) Mixtures of charcoal with oxidizing salts such as ammonium and other nitrates and not more than 50 per cent of cooling salts such as alkali chlorides or carbonates or ammonium salts, to which small proportions of inert materials such as china clay and French chalk may be added ; (4) Mixtures of an oxidizing salt such as potassium chlorate or nitrate with resinous materials, powdered glass, metallic oxides, and a binding agent such as glue; (5) Mixtures of black powder with a binding agent having a cooling effect such as Shellac and, if desired, borax; and (6) Any of the mixtures (3), (4) and (5) with the addition of iron filings. This safety igniter is suitable for use with the blasting-cartridge described in Spedifications 423,040, 430,258, and 431,935.
