Abstract

460,576. Explosives. WILLIAMS, V. H., FOSTER, B. W., and IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. July 26, 1935, No. 21322. [Class 9 (ii)] The plasticity and/or safety of a gelatinous or semi-gelatinous blasting explosive containing nitroglycerine or other liquid nitric-ester gelatinized with nitrocellulose is improved by the incorporation in the explosive of a small proportion, preferably 2 to 6 per cent, of a finely divided substantially non-carbonaceous plastic clay or clay-like material of such a character that it, or its mixtures with any carbonaceous ingredient contained in the explosive, has a low absorbency for nitroglycerine. This absorbency is preferably of the same order as that of starch, namely about 60 per cent. A small amount of absorbed water may be present in the clay. Suitable clays are china clay, pipeclay, and bentonite. One example contains : Nitroglycerine-nitroglycol mixture 30 parts by weight, nitrocotton 1À3 parts, dinitrotoluene 3 parts, ammonium nitrate 45À7 parts, sodium nitrate 10 parts, bentonite 5 parts, and maize starch 5 parts. Specifications 14590/02, [Class 1], and 432,850 are referred to as to the prior use of clays in conjunction with explosives.
