Abstract

Aryl substitution products of 1 : 1 : 1-trichloroethane are obtained by the interaction in presence of conc. sulphuric acid of chloral alcoholate with an aromatic hydrocarbon or a nuclearly-substituted halo- or nitro-derivative thereof, having a hydrogen atom attached directly to the aromatic nucleus, especially compounds of the type <PICT:0573044/IV/1> wherein X is an alkyl radical, Y is a halogen atom or a nitro group and n and m may be 0, 1 or 2, e.g. mono- or di-halo- and mono- or di-nitro-derivatives of toluene and of o- and p - xylene. Condensation is advantageously effected, using 5 to 10 per cent more of the chloral alcoholate than corresponds to one mol. of chloral for every 2 mols. of the aromatic compound. In an example, crude chloral alcoholate, obtained by slowly introducing chlorine into alcohol during three periods of 24 hours at (i) 0 DEG C., (ii) 50-60 DEG C., and (iii) 90-95 DEG C., is mixed with monochlorobenzene and 98 per cent sulphuric acid and heated to 50 DEG C. to initiate exothermic condensation and when reaction has ceased, the bulk of sulphuric acid is drained and water at approximately 85 DEG C. is added to effect separation of crude p : p1-dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane.
