Abstract

The invention comprises alloxazine - 5 - N-oxides of the formula <FORM:1012624/C2/1> where R1 and R2, the same or different, represent hydrogen atoms or straight or branched chain-alkyl groups and R3 represents a hydrogen atom or an alkyl or alkoxy group, and the preparation thereof and of alloxazines of the formula <FORM:1012624/C2/2> by reacting a 4-anilinouracil of the formula <FORM:1012624/C2/3> with nitrous acid or an ester thereof to give the corresponding 5-nitroso compound, which undergoes a cyclization reaction to give an alloxazine of the Formula (I), which reacts with excess nitrous acid or nitrous acid ester to give the compounds of the Formula (II). The mixture of compounds of the Formulae (I) and (II) may be reduced with hydrogen to give compounds of the Formula (I). In a modification of the process the 4-anilino-5-nitroso-uracil is isolated and cyclized to give compounds of the Formula (I) by heating. Compounds of the Formula (III) may be prepared by reaction of the appropriate 4-chlorouracil with an amine of the formula <FORM:1012624/C2/4> or by transamination of the appropriate 4-amino-uracil with compounds of the formula <FORM:1012624/C2/5>
