Abstract

The invention comprises steriods of the formula: <FORM:0852684/IV(b)/1> (wherein R is hydrogen or an acyl group containing at most 10 carbon atoms) and the preparation thereof by oxidizing 3b -hydroxy- or a 3b -acyloxy-6-methyl-pregna-5:16-dien-20-one and acylating the product if desired. The oxidation may be effected with hydrogen peroxide in alcoholic solution containing sodium or potassium hydroxide. In examples (1) the 3b -acetoxy compound is so oxidized at 0 DEG C and the initial product, which consists partly or completely of the 3b -ol, is acetylated with acetic anhydride in pyridine to give 3b -acetoxy-16a : 17a -epoxy-6-methyl pregn-5-en 20-one; and (2) the oxidation is conducted at reflux temperature to give the pure 3b -ol as the product.
