Abstract
Dehydrovitamin A ethers and esters are obtained by reacting a compound having the formula: <FORM:0789362/IV (b)/1> wherein X represents a halogen atom and R represents a lower alkyl or acyl group, with an equivalent amount of a phosphine, especially triphenyl phosphine, to form a quaternary phosphonium halide, converting the latter into the corresponding phosphine-ylide by treatment with an agent which splits off hydrogen halide and adding b -ionone to the phosphine-ylide. Agents which split off hydrogen halide are strong bases, e.g. phenyl or butyl lithium, sodium acetylide, alkali or alkaline-earth metal amides and alkali or alkaline-earth metal alcoholates. Examples describe the preparation of dehydrovitamin A methyl ether and dehydrovitamin A acetate.
