Abstract

3-Carbamyl-pyridinium salts of the formula <FORM:0684801/IV (b)/1> where R is a substituted or unsubstituted aliphatic, aromatic or araliphatic group and X is a halogen atom are prepared by reacting a 3-carbamyl-N-(2,4-dinitrophenyl)-pyridinium halide with a primary amine in an inert organic solvent. The solvent is preferably a lower aliphatic alcohol with or without water, and the product is isolated from the solution obtained by adding a non-polar liquid, e.g. a lower aliphatic ether. In examples, the following compounds are prepared by the reaction of 3-carbamyl-N-(2,4-dinitrophenyl)-pyridinium chloride with the appropriate amine, namely: (1) and (2) 3-carbamyl-N-benzyl-pyridinium chloride from benzylamine; (3) 3-carbamyl-N-phenyl-pyridinium chloride from aniline; (4) 3-carbamyl-N-(41-methoxystilbyl)-pyridinium chloride from 41-methoxystilbylamine; (5) 3 - carbamyl - N - (41 - ethoxystilbyl) - pyridinium chloride from 41-ethoxystilbylamine; (6) 3-carbamyl-N-cholesteryl-pyridinium chloride from 7-cholesterylamine; (7) 3-carbamyl-N-oestrylpyridinium chloride from oestramine; (8) 3-carbamyl-N-(41-sulphonamidobenzyl)-pyridinium chloride from 4-sulphonamido-benzylamine and (9) 3-carbamyl-N-desacetylcolchicine-pyridinium chloride from desacetylcolchicine. 3-Carbamyl - N - (2,4 - dinitrophenyl) - pyridinium chloride is prepared by heating together nicotinamide and 2,4-dinitrochlorobenzene.
