Abstract

The invention comprises sulphonamides of the formula <FORM:0913716/IV (b)/1> wherein R is an alkyl radical of 2-5 carbon atoms and X is hydrogen, halogen e.g. Cl, or an alkyl or alkoxy e.g. methyl or methoxy, radical, and their preparation either by reacting a 2-amino-5-alkoxy-pyrimidine with the appropriate benzenesulphonyl chloride, or by condensing the reaction product of an alkoxyaldehyde acetal or a 1,2-dialkoxyethylene an N,N-disubstituted formamide and an inorganic acid chloride such as phosgene (Vilsmeier reaction) with the appropriate benzenesulphonyl - guanidine. Specified products include 2-benzenesulphonamido- and 2-p-methyl-, p-methoxy- and p-chlorobenzenesulphonamido - 5 - ethoxy-, -propoxy- and -butoxy-pyrimidines. 2-Amino-5-alkoxy-pyrimidines are made by treating an a -alkoxy-b -dimethylamino-acrolein with guanidine in the presence of an alkali-metal alcoholate.
