Abstract
A stable non-volatile herbicidal composition is obtained by reacting a solid acid of the type Ar.O.CHR.COOH where Ar is a phenyl radical and R is an alkyl radical or hydrogen, with quick lime in the presence of sufficient water to initate the reaction, the amount of quick lime employed being at least enough to neutralize the acid and to remove the residual water present at the end of the reaction so that a dry product is obtained. Specified acids are 2-methyl-4-chlorophenoxyacetic acid, 2, 4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid 2, 4-dichloro-phenoxy - alpha - butyricacid and monochlorophenoxy acetic acids. The quick lime may be mixed with the damp filter cake obtained by precipitating the solid acid from an aqueous solution of its sodium salt, or to the melted crude hydrated acid. The composition may be diluted by the addition of further quantities of ground limestone, powdered chalk, slaked lime or other suitable powdered diluent. Specification 593,280 is referred to.
