Abstract
A process for the preparation of 5-nitro-2-furfural diacetate comprises nitrating furfural with concentrated nitric acid in the presence of acetic anhydride and a small proportion of an arsenic compound, followed by raising the pH of the reaction mixture by the addition of water and a base to convert the nitration intermediate. Technical nitric acid of 42 DEG to 43 DEG Baum<\>ae may be used for the nitration, preferably in the ratio of 1.15 parts by weight to each part by weight of furfural. The arsenic compound is preferably arsenic acid, preferably 0.0004 to 0.02 part by weight per part by weight of nitric acid being used. The temperature of the reaction mixture is preferably maintained below 40 DEG C. during the nitration reaction and the pH of the reaction is preferably raised to 3.7 (e.g. by addition of trisodium phosphate) after the nitration is completed.
