Abstract

1-Nitroanthraquinone is prepared in high yields by mononitration of anthraquinone with nitric acid/sulphuric acid mixtures. Anthraquinone is nitrated in a nitric acid/sulphuric acid mixture in which the weight ratio of nitric acid to sulphuric acid is 1 : 1 to 2 : 1, in which the weight ratio of sulphuric acid to anthraquinone is 0.5 : 1 to 1 : 1 and in which the weight ratio of sulphuric acid to water is 2.5 : 1 to 5.5 : 1, the weight ratios relating to the sum of the materials used, at temperatures in the range 45 to 70 DEG C until the anthraquinone content relative to the sum of the anthraquinone compounds is 3% by weight or less. The 1-nitroanthraquinone obtained can be used for the preparation of 1-aminoanthraquinone.
