Abstract
Nitroguanidine is prepd. by sulphonating dicyandiamide in sulphuric acid of strength over 85%, then nitrating to form nitroguanidine which is pptd. by drowning the reaction mixt. into ice/water. The improvements are the use of strong sulphuric acid (cf. 61% previously which enables less to be used with a lower sulphonation temp. (100 degrees C cf. 140-150 degrees C) and finally nitric acid alone is used for the nitration compared with nitric/sulphuric mixt. The sulphuric acid is pref. 86-88% and the sulphonation temp. is 100 degrees C. The quantity of sulphuric acid used is pref. 470-493 pts./100 pts. dicyandiamide.
