Abstract

Crotonic acid is dehydrated to crotonic anhydride by heating it with acetic anhydride to a temperature below 100 DEG C. under conditions such that the acetic acid formed is continuously removed as reaction proceeds. The reactants may be heated under a pressure such that the acetic acid boils below 100 DEG C., or the acetic acid may be removed as an azeotropic mixture with, e.g. heptane or methyl-cyclohexane. A polymerisation inhibitor such as hydroquinone may be present. Examples describe the reaction in presence of hydroquinone of acetic anhydride and crotonic acid (1) at 100 mm. pressure, (2) in presence of heptane. The Provisional Specification refers to the preparation of acrylic and methacrylic anhydrides by the above method.
