Abstract

Methacrylic acid and its derivatives such as the esters, amide and nitrile are protected against polymerization during their production or distillation by intimate contact with air or oxygen while at temperatures at which polymerization would otherwise occur. Air or oxygen may be bubbled through the liquid or introduced into the vapour. A known inhibitor such as pyrogallol or hydroquinone may be added in small quantity. Examples describe the production from acetone cyanhydrin of methacrylic esters and methacrylic acid. The Provisional Specification states that oxygen is effective for preventing the polymerization at ordinary temperature.
