Abstract
Acid amides are made by passing an alkyl carboxylic ester and ammonia together with some of the amide to be produced continuously through a reaction zone, e.g. a long tube, at pressures of 50--500 lb. per sq. in., and temperatures up to 130 DEG C., and distilling the product, preferably in a stainless steel still. Example: a mixture of methyl formate, ammonia and a little formamide is pumped into a long pipe, the temperature being first allowed to rise to 90--110 DEG C. and then to fall to 30--40 DEG C., pressure being 150 lb. per sq. in. The product is flash-distilled, preferably in a stainless steel still, formamide being left in the pot. As alkyl esters, methyl, ethyl, propyl, n- and iso-butyl formates, methyl and ethyl acetates, methyl propionate, methyl butyrate are mentioned. Specification 240,087, [Class 2 (iii), is referred to.
