Abstract
Aliphatic carboxylic acids are manufactured from unsaturated fatty acids which contain double bonds and which may be obtained from natural fats, oils and waxes, or their esters, nitriles, amides and soaps, by reacting the fatty acid or the derivative with oxygen containing ozone at a temperature not above 45 DEG C. and oxidizing the fatty ozonides thus formed with gaseous oxygen at a temperature between 75 DEG and 120 DEG C. The starting material may be, for example, oleic acid which gives azelaic and pelargonic acids; mixtures of fatty acids such as those of cotton seed oil, soy and corn seed oil; or mixtures of fatty acids obtained from fish and marine oil. In an example, oleic acid is diluted with pelargonic acid from a previous run and treated with ozonized oxygen; the product is then treated with oxygen while the temperature is maintained at 95 DEG C. to give a mixture containing mainly pelargonic and azelaic acids. Specification 604,281 is referred to.
