Abstract
The invention comprises epoxylation products of amides of unsaturated fatty acids of the formula <FORM:0828203/IV (b)/1> in which one of the substituents R1 and R3 may represent a saturated fatty acid acyl radical but otherwise the substituents R1 and R3 represent mono- or polyunsaturated fatty acid acyl radicals of at least 12 carbon atoms containing at least one double bond in an isolated position, which double bond is separated from the -CO-NH-group by at least one carbon atom being exclusively linked by saturated linkages, and in which R2 is an aromatic, alkyl-aromatic, cyclo-aliphatic or aliphatic (particularly alkylene) radical of at least 2 carbon atoms, the NH- groups being linked to different carbon atoms. The radicals R1 and R3 are preferably derived from oleic and/or linoleic acid or from soybean oil fatty acid, the latter containing a small proportion of saturated constituents leading to products in which one of the radicals R1 and R3 is saturated. The products are obtained by reacting the amide R1-NH-R2-NH-R3 with a per-acid (especially peracetic acid or a mixture of formic acid and hydrogen peroxide), at a temperature of 10 DEG to 60 DEG C., in an inert solvent consisting of at least one non-polar solvent having a dielectric constant of at least 5, or consisting of a mixture of at least one polar solvent and at least one non-polar solvent, at least one of said non-polar solvents having a dielectric constant of at least 5.
