Abstract
Ethylenic unsaturated higher fatty acids of 16-22 carbon atoms are epoxidized by heating with 0.25 to 1 mol. of acetic acid, and 1 mol. of aqueous hydrogen peroxide, for each mol. of ethylenic unsaturation, and a catalytic amount of sulphuric acid in an inert organic solvent at 40 DEG to 100 DEG C., preferably 50 DEG to 80 DEG C., for 1 to 10 hours, the sulphuric acid being present in an amount of 1/2 to 5 per cent based on the combined weight of acetic acid and aqueous hydrogen peroxide. Suitable solvents are benzene and hexane. The preferred starting materials are oleic acid and fatty acid mixtures containing oleic acid such as fatty acids obtained from fatty oils. Detailed examples are given of the epoxidation of (1) a commercial fatty acid containing oleic acid; (2) cottonseed oil fatty acids; and (3) soybean oil fatty acid. The products are intermediates for lubricants, lubricant additives, stabilizers, plasticizers, resins and textile oils.
