Abstract

Polyamidopolyesters are made from di- and/or tri-merised unsaturated fatty acids, alkylene diamines and monohydric alcohols by: (a) reacting a polyamine with an excess of a di- and/or trimerised unsaturated fatty acid and if desired, one or more polybasic carboxylic acids or a mixture thereof with one or more monobasic carboxylic acids or with an ester or partial ester of such acid or mixture with a monohydric alcohol, and when the starting material contains free carboxyl groups, the product is subjected to subsequent esterification with a monohydric alcohol of such as are still present or (b) reacting a polyamine with an equivalent or approximately equivalent quantity of di-and/or trimerised unsaturated fatty acids or a mixture thereof with other polycarboxylic acids, the product being further reacted with one or more polybasic carboxylic acids and/or one or more saturated or unsaturated monobasic carboxylic acids or with an ester or partial ester of such acid or mixture with a monohydric alcohol and, when the starting material contains free carboxyl groups, the product is subjected to subsequent esterification with monohydric alcohols of such as are still present. Lists of suitable reagents are given. In the examples, polyamido-polyesters are made from (1) and (2) soya fatty acid, ethanol and a polyamide derived ethylene diamine and dimerised fatty acids; (3) dimerised fatty acids, ethanol and a polyamide derived from ethylene diamine, succinic acid and dimerised fatty acids, and (4) soya fatty acid, propanol and a polyamide derived from ethylene diamine and dimerised fatty acids. The products of Examples (1) and (2) are dissolved in solutions in benzine of (1) a soya alkyd resin and (2) a linseed alkyd resin.
