An alkyd resin is made by reacting (1) a mono-ester of a cyclopentanetetracarboxylic acid and a monohydric alcohol of b.p. higher than 130‹ C. (preferably a C 5-15 alcohol) and (2) a polyhydric alcohol (e.g. glycerol, trimethylol propane or pentaerythritol). The reaction mixture may also include a fatty acid (e.g. pelargonic acid or linseed fatty acids) or a triglyceride alcoholysis. product. Coating compositions are made by (a) dissolving the products of acid number less than 10 in an organic solvent (e.g. xylene or white spirits) or (b) neutralizing the products of acid number 50-100 with a base (e.g. triethylamine) and dissolving them in water. Urea-formaldehyde resins or melamineformaldehyde resins may be added to these compositions.
