Abstract

A hydroxylated blown fatty material is produced by blowing an unsaturated non-drying or semi-drying fatty material with an oxygen-containing gas at a temperature below about 100 DEG C. in the presence of water. The unsaturated fatty material includes fatty alcohols, amides and esters. A temperature of between 30 DEG and 50 DEG C. is preferred, air, oxygen, ozone or mixtures thereof being used. The water may be mixed with the fatty material either entirely before blowing or by continually adding suitable amounts during blowing. The blowing treatment may also be effected by passing the oxygen-containing gas, saturated with water vapour at the temperature at which the blowing is to be carried out, through the fatty material. The blowing may be carried out in the presence of a small amount of an oil-soluble emulsifying agent such as a sulphonated oil, fatty alkylolamide, oil-soluble soap or wool grease.ALSO:A hydroxylated blown fatty material is produced by blowing an unsaturated non-drying or semi-drying fatty material with an oxygen-containing gas at a temperature below about 100 DEG C. in the presence of water. The unsaturated fatty material includes fatty acids, alcohols, amides and esters. The hydrophilic properties of the products are thereby improved, enabling them to be used as substitutes for chamois moellon, particularly in the preparation of fat liquors for leather treating, and for other purposes. The blowing may be carried out in the presence of a small amount of an oil-soluble emulsifying agent such as a sulphonated oil, fatty alkylolamide, oil-soluble soap or wool grease. The unsaturated non-drying or semi-drying fatty material specified comprises fish oils such as cod oil, menhaden oil, herring oil and whale oil, vegetable oils such as teaseed oil, soya bean oil, peanut oil, corn oil and cottonseed oil, and red oil or commercial oleic acid. Fat liquors for leather treating may be prepared by mixing the resulting blown oils &c. with finished or unfinished sulphonated oils, the pH being adjusted before or after admixture. Mixtures with sulphonated cod oil are specified.
