Abstract
523,080. Esters. GUDGEON, H., HILL, R., and IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Dec. 23, 1938, No. 37506. [Class 2 (iii)] Esters of the general formula CH 2 :CHÀCH:CHÀCOOR, where R is alkyl or alkoxyalkyl, are made by heating alkyl- or alkoxyalkyl-α-acyloxy-#- ethylidene propionates in gaseous or vapour form, at temperatures of 350‹ to 600‹C. The α-acyloxy-#-ethylidene propionates are obtained by acylating the corresponding α- hydroxy-#-ethylidene propionates with an aliphatic or aromatic mono-carboxylic acid ; the α-hydroxy-#-ethylidene propionates, of the general formula CH 3 ÀCH.CH OHÀCHÀCOOR, are themselves made by reacting crotonaldehydecyanohydrin with water, hydrochloric acid, and an alcohol of the formula ROH. In examples, (1) 1-carbomethoxy-1:3-butadiene is made by heating methyl α-acetoxy-#-ethyldene propionate, (2) 1-carbobutoxy-1:3-butadiene is made from n-butyl α-acetoxy-#-ethylidene propionate, (3) 1-carbethoxy-1:3-butadiene is made from ethyl α-acetoxy-#-ethylidene propionate, and (4) the #-ethoxyethyl ester of 1-carboxy-1:3- butadiene is made from #-ethoxyethyl α- acetoxy-#-propylidene propionate.
