Abstract

Ketene is used to acetylate aliphatic cyanhydrins, e.g cyanhydrins of acetone, crotonaldehyde and trimethylacetaldehyde. In examples: (1) ketene is passed through three vessels in series charged with acetaldehydecyanhydrin; when the contents of the first vessel ceases to evolve heat, it is distilled to give the acetic acid derivative; (2) ketene obtained by the pyrolysis of acetone is passed into a benzene solution of acetonecyanhydrin; the product, a -acetoxyisobutyric acid nitrile is obtained by fractional distillation; (3) ethylene and propylenecyanhydrins are similarly treated with crude ketene. The acetylated products on heating to remove acetic acid give the corresponding unsaturated derivative.
