Abstract
Dialkyl fumarates are produced by heating the corresponding maleate, prepared from maleic anhydride, in the presence of elemental sulphur. The use of 1 per cent of sulphur and a temperature of above 180 DEG C. is preferred. In examples: (1) diethyl maleate and sulphur heated at 200 DEG C. yield diethyl fumarate and (2) diethyl maleate refluxed with sulphur yields diethyl fumarate. Other fumarates instanced are di-n-propyl, di-n-butyl, di-n-hexyl, di-isopropyl, and di-tertiary butyl.
