Abstract
In the esterification of dicarboxylic acids with OXO alcohols in reaction vessels having metal surfaces exposed to the reaction mixture, the formation of colour due to sulphur-containing impurities in the reactants is prevented by the presence of one or more oxides or acids of phosphorus or salts of such acids in an amount equal to 0.00005-1.5 per cent by weight of the alcohol. Orthophosphoric acid (85 per cent) is preferred, but meta- and pyro-phosphoric, ortho- and pyro-phosphorous, hypophosphorous and hypophosphoric acids and the corresponding oxides and salts are also effective. The dicarboxylic acid or its anhydride may be used for the esterification, and the process may be carried out in iron, steel or stainless steel vessels. Examples show the production of octyl phthalates using as colour inhibitors orthophosphoric acid, metaphosphoric acid, orthophosphorous acid, phosphorous pentoxide and the three sodium orthophosphates. Comparative figures are given of the depth of colour of the esters when esterification is carried out with and without an inhibitor. C7-C9 OXO alcohols and maleic acid are also specified as reactants.
