Abstract

An acylation product of phosphorous acid or its alkali metal salts with general formula <FORM:0981252/C1/1> prevents calcium carbonate precipitation in water-softening procedures.ALSO:An acylation product of phosphorous acid containing at least two atoms of phosphorus in the molecule is obtained by reacting a carboxylic acid and water which are present in a total molar proportion of at least 2.5 and preferably at least 3 with one mol. proportion of phosphorus trichloride, the amount of water accounting for up to 1.6 mol. proportions if the acid is monocarboxylic and up to 2.1 mol. proportions if the acid is dicarboxylic and then heating the reaction mixture to between 80 DEG and 200 DEG C. In carrying out the reaction phosphorus trichloride is suitably added to a mixture of the acid, e.g. acetic acid, and water while stirring and, if necessary, cooling, but it is also possible to add the acid and water to the trichloride or to add water to a mixture of the acid and the trichloride or the reverse. The process may be carried out in two stages, the first stage being carried out at between 0 DEG and 80 DEG C. and the second stage at between 80 DEG and 200 DEG C., e.g. between 100 DEG and 160 DEG C. Specified acids are acetic acid, C3-C20 aliphatic monocarboxylic acids, aromatic mono-carboxylic acids e.g. benzoic acid, and C3-C10 aliphatic dicarboxylic acids. The reaction product may be recovered from the reaction mixture by separating excess acylating agent preferably by distillation under reduced pressure and may be purified by recrystallization or may be treated with water at a temperature above 60 DEG C. The acidic product may be converted to the corresponding alkali metal salts, e.g. by neutralization with aqueous or alcoholic caustic alkali solutions. The products from an acid RCOOH wherein R is alkyl, have the general formula <FORM:0981252/C2/1> Examples are given in which the acids used are acetic, propionic, caproic, lauric, benzoic and adipic acids, respectively. The acylation products form complexes with polyvalent metal salts and the products or their alkali metal salts may be used for the prevention of calcium carbonate precipitation in the softening of water and also for the stabilization of per compounds. When the products contain long chains they are suitable as wetting agents.
