Abstract

Optical elements are formed by photopolymerizing, in contact with a mould surface an ethylenically unsaturated liquid monomeric compound or a partial polymer thereof or a mixture of the two in the presence of 1,11-azodicyclohexane-carbonitrile or an alkyl ester or amide derived therefrom. The ethylenically unsaturated compounds may be methacrylic acid, methyl methacrylate, cyclohexyl methacrylate, 2,2-trifluorethyl methacrylate and esters of alpha-fluoroacrylic acid with fluorinated alcohols. If desired, the polymerization may be assisted by heating. In a modification, the optical element may first be formed as a preform which is subsequently converted to the optical element by the process of Specification 582,248.
