Abstract

Polymerization products are manufactured by polymerizing methacrylonitrile, or a mixture containing it, together with another polymerizable organic compound (except maleic anhydride), e.g. isoprene, styrene, acrylic acid or methacrylic acid, their esters or amides, vinyl derivatives such as vinyl acetate, vinyl cyanide or vinyl chloride, or acrolein, and in the presence of a plasticizer, the proportion of methacrylonitrile in the mixture amounting to not less than 40 per cent and preferably between 50 and 75 per cent. The plasticizer may be one of those normally employed in the plastics industry or one of those enumerated in Specification 419,357 (except maleic anhydride). The polymerization may be carried out by any of the methods described in the said Specification, and the products may be employed for the manufacture of safety glass or for other purposes as described therein. Examples describe the polymerization, by heating with benzoyl peroxide, of methacrylonitrile together with: (1) methyl methacrylate and the normal orthophthalic ester of the monomethyl ether of ethylene glycol; (2) methyl (or ethyl) methacrylate and dimethyl phthalate (or cyclohexanone, triacetin, diethyl phthalate, dibutyl phthalate, or a mixture of tricresyl phosphate and dimethyl phthalate); (3) styrene, coumarin, butyro- and valerolactones; (4) vinyl acetate, coumarin, butyro- and valerolactones; (5) methyl methacrylate, vinyl acetate, and dimethyl phthalate; (6) methyl acrylate, methyl methacrylate and dimethyl phthalate; (7) methyl acrylate and dimethyl phthalate; (8) acrolein and dimethyl phthalate.
