Abstract
Polymerizable substances are manufactured by reacting acrylic or methacrylic acid with a dihydric alcohol under the conditions usually used in esterification to form a diacid ester, if desired in the presence of a polymerization inhibitor, e.g. copper powder. As dihydric alcohols may be employed the unsubstituted glycols, e.g. ethylene glycol or the propanediols, or the monoethers and monoesters of glycerol. The products are polymerized, alone or in admixture with one another or with other substances which may be polymerizable, with or without other additions such as organic or inorganic fillers. The polymerization may be effected by the action of light, or by heating, e.g. to 100 DEG C., alone or with an oxygen catalyst, e.g. benzoyl peroxide. The polymerization products may be employed as electric resistance materials. Textiles may be treated with the monomeric substances which are then polymerized. Examples describe the manufacture of ethylene glycol dimethacrylate and diacrylate, the polymerization of each of these substances alone and of the former in admixture with methyl methacrylate and with styrene. Vinyl acetate is also specified as a substance with which interpolymerization may be effected. Specification 371,396 is referred to.
