Abstract

Polymerization of vinyl compounds which may already be partially polymerized is effected in smooth - walled moulds, intensified polymerization conditions being used at first followed by less intense conditions and finally, if desired, more intense conditions. Suitable apparatus is described in Specification 450,305. In examples: (1) a mixture of ethyl methacrylate or styrene and benzoyl peroxide is polymerized by heating at 100 DEG C., 80 DEG C. and finally at 100--120 DEG C.; (3) a mixture of vinyl acetate, methyl methacrylate, neat's-foot oil, turpentine oil and benzoyl peroxide is polymerized by heating at 100 DEG C., 50--60 DEG C. and finally at 80--100 DEG C.
