Abstract
Artificial dentures and dental plates are obtained by filling dental moulds, prepared in the usual manner, with a highly viscous but flowable composition consisting wholly or largely of one or more of the unsaturated organic substances in monomeric or partially polymerized condition, and subjecting the composition to polymerization. The polymerization may be effected by warming the moulds at temperatures at which bubble formation does not occur; or may be carried out more quickly at higher temperatures in an autoclave under gas pressure. Known polymerization catalysts, e.g. hydrogen peroxide and benzoyl peroxide, and regulators, e.g. turpentine oil may be employed. Additions such as artificial and natural resins, cellulose derivatives, e.g. cellulose tripropionate and cellulose ethers, softeners, dyestuffs and fillers may be employed. The desired viscous condition is obtained by partial polymerization or by dissolving substances, e.g. cellulose derivatives in the monomer. Gypsum moulds are coated with a film of water-glass, gelatine, polyvinyl alcohol, sodium polyacrylate, &c. to facilitate release of the finished article. In examples, a gypsum mould, coated with gelatine, is filled with a mixture of (1) methacrylic acid methyl ester and acrylic acid butyl ester together with benzoyl peroxide, red dyestuff and white pigment, (2) methacrylic acid ethyl ester and cellulose tripropionate, and (3) acrylic acid ethyl ester, acrylic acid nitrile, vinyl acetate and methacrylic acid methyl ester.ALSO:Artificial dentures and dental plates are obtained by filling dental moulds, prepared in the usual manner, with a highly viscous but flowable composition consisting wholly or largely of one or more of the unsaturated organic substances in monomeric or partially polymerized condition, and subjecting the composition to polymerization, e.g. by warming the moulds at temperatures at which bubble formation does not occur or at higher temperatures under gas pressure.
