Abstract
The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises subject-matter set out in Specification 450,305 with additional examples of compositions wherein polymerization is effected with addition of benzoyl peroxide or mixtures of methacrylic acid methyl ester with dibutyl phosphate and neat's-foot oil, or with mineral oil, or with vinyl acetate, neat's-foot oil and turpentine oil or with neats-foot oil alone. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.ALSO:Sheets or plates having highly polished surfaces are made from compositions consisting wholly or mainly of substantially completely polymerized products of methacrylic acid esters which are sufficiently hard and non-adhesive as to be suitable as glass substitutes, by placing a sheet or plate of such composition between smooth glass plates or sheets, pressing at an elevated temperature, and removing the composition sheet. The temperature may be 30-100 DEG C. and the pressure, 5 atmospheres. The glass plates may be cooled before removing the composition sheet. The composition may comprise the methyl or ethyl ester of methacrylic acid, or mixed polymers thereof. There may be added softening agents, dyestuff fillers, carbidifying agents, cellulose esters or ethers, caoutchouc or guttapercha. The softening agents may be phthalic acid ester or tricresyl phosphate. Oils may be added to diminish adhesiveness. Specifications 419,306; and 433,540, [Group IV], are referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also the use of compositions of styrol or other polymers of unsaturated compounds. There is also described subject-matter set out in Specification 450,305, [Group IV], with additional examples of compositions wherein polymerization is effected, with addition of benzoyl peroxide, of mixtures of methacrylic acid methyl ester with dibutyl phthalate and neat's-foot oil, or with mineral oil or with vinyl acetate, neat's-foot oil and turpentine oil or with neat's-foot oil alone. The glass plates may be etched with hydrofluoric acid or matted by sandblasting. This does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
